South Luangwa

The Valley of the Leopard

"South Luangwa holds the world's highest naturally occurring population of leopard — and a wildlife density that rivals anywhere on the continent."

This is an expedition built around serious photography. Small by design, guided personally by me, and structured to put you in the right place at the right time — whether that’s a leopard working through the riverine forest at first light, a pack of wild dogs hunting across open floodplain, or a Southern Carmine bee-eater colony erupting from the steep clay banks of the Luangwa. The valley rewards patience, and nine years of field experience means I know exactly where and when to find the light.

The Destination

South Luangwa National Park covers 9,050 square kilometres of the Luangwa River valley in eastern Zambia — the southernmost extension of the East African Rift. The Luangwa River is widely considered the most intact major river system on the continent, and its seasonal flood cycle is what drives the extraordinary wildlife concentrations the park is famous for. As water recedes through the dry season, game presses toward the river in numbers you simply won’t find elsewhere.

The park holds over 60 mammal species and more than 400 bird species, with several animals endemic or near-endemic to the valley — among them the Thornicroft’s giraffe, Cookson’s wildebeest, and Crawshay’s zebra. The wildlife list here is exceptional by any measure. And unlike many of Africa’s marquee destinations, South Luangwa receives a fraction of the visitor numbers — which means when you’re on a sighting, you’re often the only vehicle there.

Night drives are permitted throughout the park — a genuine rarity across Africa’s major reserves. Combined with exceptional daytime game activity, South Luangwa offers more productive shooting hours than almost anywhere else I have worked on this continent.

What you'll photograph

Built around your photography, not a fixed programme

Stay at Chikunto Safari Lodge South Luangwa National Park

Chikunto sits on the Luangwa River’s famous Big Bend, deep inside the park and close to the wildlife-rich Nsefu Sector — the northern area of South Luangwa with some of the highest leopard densities and most productive game viewing in the valley. With only five luxury tented suites, the lodge is genuinely intimate, and being inside the park means earlier starts and later finishes than staying outside the gate.

Critically for a photography expedition, Chikunto is built for it — dedicated editing space, beanbags, dust covers, and guides trained in vehicle positioning for photography. The elevated main deck overlooks both a waterhole and the river, so productive sightings can happen without even leaving camp.
